RHESSI: First Results

چکیده

The RHESSI observations consist of imaging spectroscopy in the γ-ray, hard X-ray, and “firm X-ray” (3-20 keV) bands. These data are now the most extensive and capable solar high-energy observations at high spectral and spatial resolution. The low-energy hard X-ray spectrum bridges the thermal and non-thermal ranges of solar electron distributions in flares systematically for the first time. In this presentation I survey some results from the first 18 months of observation, including findings on image and spectral morphology (both hard X-ray and γ-ray), and the behavior of microflares in the 3-20 keV band.

First Limits on the 3-200 Kev X-ray Spectrum of the Quiet Sun Using Rhessi

We present the first results using the Reuven Ramaty High-Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager, RHESSI, to observe solar X-ray emission not associated with active regions, sunspots or flares (the quiet Sun). Using a newly developed chopping technique (fan-beam modulation) during seven periods of offpointing between June 2005 to October 2006, we obtained upper limits over 3-200 keV for the quietest...

Hard X-rays and γ-rays are the most direct signatures of energetic electrons and ions in the sun’s atmosphere which is optically thin at these energies and their radiation involves no coherent processes. Being collisional they are complementary to gyro-radiation in probing atmospheric density as opposed to magnetic field and the electrons are primarily 10–100 keV in energy, complementing the (>...

Comparison of Hinode/XRT and RHESSI detection of hot plasma in the non-flaring solar corona

We compare observations of the non-flaring solar corona made simultaneously with Hinode/XRT and with RHESSI. The analyzed corona is dominated by a single active region on 12 November 2006. The comparison is made on emission measures. We derive emission measure distributions vs temperature of the entire active region from multifilter XRT data. We check the compatibility with the total emission m...

Radio emissions from double RHESSI TGFs

A detailed analysis of Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGFs) is performed in association with World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN) sources and very low frequency (VLF) sferics recorded at Duke University. RHESSI clock offset is evaluated and found to experience changes on the 5 August 2005 and 21 October 2013, based on the an...
